Our mission is to prepare advanced practice providers to deliver high quality, patient-centered care using the best evidence to guide practice.
The APP Critical Care Fellowship is a 9-month post graduate training program combining a competency-based curriculum with practice-based learning in the critical care setting. The fellowship includes didactic, clinical, simulation, a mentorship program, peer support, and a variety of other strategies to help the APP transition into the critical care provider role.
Increase proficiency of critical care management, including invasive skills, using a structured transition to practice experience.
Assist the advanced practice provider in developing organization and prioritization skills to manage varying complexities and responsibilities.
Increase confidence to effectively communicate and lead team-based care.
Two specialties are currently offered in the Fellowship Program: General Medicine ICU and Cardiovascular ICU with an emphasis on CV surgery and VA/VV ECMO management.
Coming Soon: Neuroscience ICU
There are two (2) cohorts annually, with one (1) cohort starting in March, and the other cohort starting in August.
Cohort size varies depending on the specialty needs.
Each cohort starts with a three (3) week Boot Camp that takes place Monday through Friday. Following the Boot Camp, fellows transition into the hospital setting.
Clinical shifts may consist of days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
Fellowship activities consist of didactic, simulation, case presentations, journal club, professional development, and various other strategies meant to facilitate a successful transition.
The fellowship is operated by a team – the program director, fellowship manager, and multiple educators. The fellows will report to the fellowship manager and program director. Various other members of the team will serve as preceptors and/or mentors throughout the fellowship.
Fellows are salaried and full-time employees during the fellowship. All fellows are eligible for medical, dental, vision, and various other employment benefits.
To apply for the fellowship, submit the following:

August Cohort start

• Early August: Fellows start.
We highly encourage applying in your last academic semester or post-graduation. Normally, with the interview process, boards, and obtaining the necessary components for the credentialing process plus credentialing, it takes approximately six (6) months post-graduation to complete everything. For those who have graduated and are already licensed when applying to the fellowship, anticipate the credentialing process to take up to four (4) months.
If selected for an interview, anticipate the interview process to be approximately 1.5 hours. The interview process includes the traditional interview question-style format with a panel of three (3) to four (4) advanced practice providers and a clinical-based component.
Fellows will work no more than 160 hours a month, which equates to approximately 40 hours a week. However, given the role is shift work, there may be weeks where you spend slightly more or less than 40 hours. Fellows will also spend time engaging in their project and didactic content.
Yes, all fellows who successfully complete the fellowship are employed with the organization.
Fellows are provided clear expectations and guidelines for fellowship completion on Day One (1) of the fellowship. Each fellow is measured according to specific competency metrics at various intervals throughout the fellowship. Additionally, each fellow is required to complete additional examinations and/or simulation exercises to demonstrate learning.
